Justice Dipak Mishra, Justice Prafulla Chandra Pant and Justice Amitava Roy delivered the verdict, saying no new information was provided by Memon’s lawyers. The attempt by Prashant Bhushan, Indira Jaising, Anand Grover, Vrinda Grover, Nitya Ramkrishnan, Yug Choudhury and Raju Ramachandran to delay the execution, was not successful.
Memon’s lawyer Anand Grover sought to invoke Article 21 to seek a 14-day stay on the execution on humanitarian ground and added that they needed time to understand the reasons behind the rejection of Yakub’s mercy petition. However, Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi termed the development as an attempt to abuse the system and delay the hanging for long.
While delivering the verdict, Justice Dipak Mishra took the 2014 mercy petition (which was rejected by the President) into account and said that Yakub was given ample opportunity to present his case.
