On his meeting to Tashkent, PM Modi told Xi Jinping that, China must make a fair and objective assessment on merits on India’s NSG bid.
41 Countries backed India’s NSG Membership but 7 Countries including China, Brazil, Switzerland, Turkey, Ireland, New Zealand and Austria opposed it, saying signing NPTremains the main criteria.
During PM Modi’s recent visit, Swiss President Johann Schneider-Ammann had supported India’s NSG bid, but Switzerland opposed India’s bid for becoming an NSG member at the Plenary in Seoul. Mexico kept its word though.
It is to be noted that, while 190 countries have signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, India, Israel, North Korea, Pakistan and South Sudan are not part of it.
