Group Clash in Mayurbhanj; 5 Policemen injured, 24 arrested

Mayurbhhanj, Oct 23: As many as five policemen including a woman sub-inspector and several other villagers were injured in a violent clash between police and villagers on Thursday night over death of a woman. Following the clash tension prevailed at Khunta area in the district. Police arrested 24 people in this connection.

According to reports, a dead body of woman was found hanging from a tree in the area under the Khunta police jurisdiction. Police registered a case as unnatural death. However, the villagers and relatives of the deceased demanded high-level probe terming it as an act of ‘gang rape’. They also demanded for compensation from the government.

Their protest turned violent when police tried to control the mob. Some villages started pelting stones and charged police officials over the issue. Irate mob went on rampage and attack police vehicle, in which a woman sub-inspector and four constables were injured critically. Police arrested 24 people for attacking policemen and initiating group clash.
