Dalmiya was not well for a few weeks and even stayed away from BCCI meetings and related activities. He was admitted to BM Birla Hospital in Kolkata three days ago after complaining of chest pain. He had undergone coronary angiography.
Although he was said to be stable and his conditions improved yesterday, the bad news came today. West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee condoled the demise of Jagmohan Dalmiya.
Born on May 30, 1940, Dalmiya was a businessman. He was credited with commercialization of cricket and making BCCI a cash-rich body. He even strengthened India’s position within the ICC. He always fought for the rights of Indian cricketers.
In 2005, he was expelled from the BCCI by the rival faction led by Sharad Pawar. The BCCI charged him of financial irregularities, but failed to prove anything. He was exnorated of all charges in 2007 and made a comeback as the President of Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB).
In June 2013, he was appointed as the interim president of the BCCI after N. Srinivasan stepped aside pending probe on his son-in-law’s alleged involvement in spot-fixing in the IPL. On March 2, 2015 Dalmiya returned as BCCI president after a 10-year gap.
