Steven Smith takes over as New Australian Captain

After Michael Clarke ruled himself out of the Test series against India following an injury, Cricket Australia named Steven Smith as the new skipper of the team. Excited at the latest development, Smith promised to be an ‘aggressive and positive leader’ in the ongoing Test series.

Australia had won the Adelaide Test by 48 runs in a thrilling encounter. However, Clarke later revealed that he won’t be to play in the remaining part of the series. Clarke’s cricket career is in jeopardy because of the hamstring and back injury he is going through.

Smith, who is 25 years and 195 days, has become Australia’s youngest Test captain. The record was held by Kim Hughes, who had taken over in March 1979 at 25 years and 57 days. He is also the third-youngest player in Australian cricket history to get the captaincy job.

Smith has scored 1,749 runs in 23 Tests at an average of 46.02. He has scored 5 hundreds and 9 fifties. He has also played 45 ODIs and scored 921 runs with 2 hundreds and 3 fifties.
