Nepal rejects Calls for Hindu Rashtra, Violent Protests Erupt

Nepal’s Constituent Assembly rejected calls to make the Himalayan Nation ‘Hindu Rashtra’ again, sparking violent protests across the country. Nepal was a Hindu Nation for centuries before being converted into a Secular State following the abolition of Monarchy in 2006.

More than two-thirds of members of the assembly, voted against making Nepal a Hindu State again. The proposal was mooted by Rastirya Prajatantra Party Nepal. Many people in Nepal, including the Muslims want Nepal to be declared as a Hindu Nation following the menace from Christian missionaries. However, Maoists have rejected the demand.

In the fresh violence, many vehicles were torched or damaged. Hundreds of Hindu protesters clashed with the cops outside the Assembly Hall. As the drafting of new Constitution is going on, security has been tightened in Kathmandu and other parts of the country.
