Carbon Sequestration Seminar to be held in Bhubaneswar

Carbon Sequestration Seminar 2015With an aim to provide the stakeholders a strong platform to discuss about advanced technology and find out solutions to the alarming global warming situation due to increasing numbers of coal fired power utilities, NALCO, Indocan Technology and Odisha State Pollution Control Board are jointly organizing the Carbon Sequestration Seminar 2015 in Bhubaneswar on 24th and 25th of March.

Fully dedicated to dissemination of advanced knowledge in the area of microalgae based sequestration from fuel gas and bio refinery technologies for utilizing biomass the Seminar titled ‘Scope of Algae based Technology for Carbon Capture & Potential of Technology at Pilot Plant of NALCO, CPP’ is going to be attended and addressed by various policy-makers, professionals, academicians and industrialists.

Speaking on the benefits of the seminar, Mr. U N Behera, IAS, Development Commissioner, ACS Forest & Env. Dept. cum Chairman, SPCB stated, “This is a need of the hour initiative by the organizers as global warming has emerged as one of the major challenges before the world. Large thermal power plants in the state are sources of enormous carbon emission. This seminar will provide a forum for extensive panel discussion especially on potential of adaptation of microalgae based accelerated carbon sequestration technology to minimize carbon emissions.”

It should be noted, India’s first biotechnology based carbon sequestration has been successfully commissioned on a pilot-cum-demonstration basis in Odisha by leading public sector Navaratna Company NALCO. The results have been very encouraging and likely to have significant impact in the long term to fulfill the country’s commitment to reduce the rate of GHG emissions without compromising developmental goals.

Enlightening more into the core objective of the technology and the seminar, Mr. Siddhanta Dash, IFS, Addl Principal Conservator of Forest stated, “Carbon Capture and Sequestration is the process of capturing waste carbon dioxide (CO2) from large point sources, such as thermal power plants. It is a potential means of mitigating the contribution of fossil fuel emissions to global warming and ocean acidification”. This seminar will definitely create awareness among the policy makers, professionals, academicians and industrialists through exchange of ideas on latest scientific achievements for the benefit of the region, particularly for the state of Odisha, he further added.

The Conference will cover all areas of emerging technologies in algal biology, biomass production, cultivation, harvesting, extraction of bio-products and econometrics. Technologists and practitioners of National and Inter-national repute are participating in the seminar to discuss on ‘microalgae sustainable carbon sequestration from fuel gas’, ‘microalgae mass cultivation and harvesting, extraction systems’, ‘bio-refinery and bio-products from algal biomass’, ‘life cycle analysis’ and ‘techno-economic modeling of algae based carbon sequestration systems’
